Hi Year 6 and Year 7 students!

Welcome to Term 3.

Learning intention: This term we will begin our learning in Music by digging into some music analysis. This means, listening to and thinking about music. This will then help us when we come to play and compose our own music later in the term, as we will know more about how composers and musicians use music to express themselves.

We’re going to begin by learning about Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.

No, not that Beethoven!! This Beethoven:

5 Things You (Probably) Didn't Know About Beethoven's 7th Symphony ...

Assessment

Each week, there will be a different part to the project, finishing with a bigger assessment task at the end. You will receive a grade each week for each part of the project. For today, you will be graded on the answers that you provide to the questions below. This is because our lesson today is focused on building our knowledge of Beethoven and his 5th Symphony. So, put some effort into what you write in your booklet.

Here is an assessment rubric for The Beethoven Project: Part 1

  • symphony
  • tempo

  • melody
  • harmony
  • dynamics
  • rhythm
  • motif
  • crescendo
  • decrescendo
  • pianissimo
  • piano
  • forte

  • presto
  • allegro
  • andante

Then, watch/listen to this animation of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony below. **Write 5 sentences about the music and animation in your booklet, for example, what the video showed, what you thought of it, what the music is like.** You must use the 5 words that you found definitions for. For example, “Many people recognise Beethoven’s Symphony No.5 as soon as they hear the first four-note motif, ‘da-da-da-DUM’”.

Type your 5 sentences into the correct column on the Padlet below, so that we can build up a bank of good sentences about Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and learn from each other about what the musical words mean. Click on the plus sign under the column of each of your 5 musical words, and type your 5 sentences. Remember to type you and your partner’s names and class at the beginning of your response, so we know whose it is!
