Part 4 – the final frontier! Well done for making it this far.

Part 4 turns you into a music producer, creating your own remix of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.

Assessment

For Part 4, you will be graded on the piece of music that you create in GarageBand, which has to include the famous motif from Beethoven’s 5th Symphony somehow (da da da dum!).

Here is an assessment rubric for The Beethoven Project: Part 4:

Step 1

Choose a MacBook and write down the number in your booklet. This is so that you will always know which one your work is saved on. Also collect a midi keyboard and a pair of headphones.

Step 2

Open GarageBand and create an Empty Project. Remember, if you want to add a loop to a track, it will need to be an audio track (blue microphone). If you are wanting to play on the midi keyboard, you will need to choose a software instrument track (green keyboard).

Step 3

Choose a drum loop that you want to use to build your remix around. Think about what style you want to create (rock/hip hop/blues etc).

Step 4

Either: Using the keyboard, practice playing the motif from Beethoven’s 5th Symphony in time with your drum beat. The notes that you need to play are below, but ask for Mrs Britton’s help with this if you’re not sure, or ask a friend who learnt to play it in Part 3. Experiment with the tempo (play it really fast or really slow), and experiment with pitch (play it down low or up high). Record it when you are ready.

Step 5

Add any other instruments that you want to your remix, either playing them using the keyboard (you can change the instrument sound), or adding loops from the Loops Browser. Check the assessment rubric to see how many tracks you need to use.

Step 6

Listen to what you have created. Think about the balance of dynamics (is something too loud or soft?). Keep remixing until you are happy with your piece of music.

Step 7

Show your composition to Mrs Britton, and be ready to explain your project to her!

DON’T FORGET TO SAVE YOUR WORK!
